Seamless Summer Meals Kickoff at Westfield Plaza Bonita

Summer Meals Kickoff Event

Sweetwater Union HSD officially kicked off the Seamless Summer Meals program yesterday, offering free lunches to any child 18 and under. Sweetwater has always provided free summer meals to students at school sites, but this year a new partnership with Westfield Plaza Bonita and National City Police Department allows us to reach kids where they are: out and about, enjoying their summer break.

On the menu yesterday was a Southwest salad (either with chicken or chickpeas), a turkey and cheese sandwich, and a yogurt parfait with blueberries and graham crackers. Children could choose milk, orange juice, and fruit or a garden salad as well. The menu changes daily and includes various salads, sandwiches, and sides.

Helping us kickoff the summer meals event were two of National City’s finest: Lieutenant Alex Hernandez and Lieutenant Robert Rounds, who enjoyed a toast of milk and orange juice. The National City Police Department community storefront is the site of the summer meals program at Plaza Bonita, between Target and the Peet’s Coffee on the east side entrance (near the parking garage).

Cheers to Seamless Summer Meals!

Also on deck were Ricardo Ruffo and Jesse Martinez of Mission Federal Credit Union, who gifted Sweetwater Union HSD with a generous donation of $750. They remained on site with a table of goodies and information to help parents set their kids up for financial success.

News organizations also attended, including Fox 5 San Diego and Univision, capturing the dedication of the community when it comes to ensuring children are fed throughout summer.

Seamless Summer Meals is available Monday through Friday from 10:30am to 1pm. On the first day we served 47 kids! Since this was the first day of Seamless Summer Meals, and the first day at this new location, we are expecting more and more to join as word spreads about our exciting partnership. Hope to see more students throughout summer!
